Inspired by ‘Representation of Female Artists in Britain’, an annual research paper conducted by the Freelands Foundation, Female Futures asks panelists to reflect on the future for female artists.
How much has the art world changed since the Great East London Art Audit in 2012? What will it look like for today’s graduates in five years’ time? Will the current enthusiasm for collecting art by female artists have a long-term impact on the industry? What other groups in the art world are at risk of being overlooked?
Female Futures will be chaired by Marcelle Joseph, curator and collector of female artists, joined by Melanie Cassoff, the Managing Director of the Freelands Foundation, Alexandra Warde, the Co-Director of Bosse and Baum, and Emma Fineman, FBA Futures exhibitor.
This event is part of FBA Futures 2019, the UK’s biggest annual survey of emerging contemporary figurative art, mapping new practices and ideas of representation and draughtsmanship.

Mall Galleries is delighted to present the seventh edition of FBA Futures, the annual exhibition showcasing the best in new contemporary figurative painting, drawing, sculpture and printmaking by the outstanding art graduates of 2018.
FBA Futures is the UK’s biggest annual survey of emerging contemporary figurative art, mapping new practices and ideas of representation and draughtsmanship. In 2019, forty-one artists and over eighty works will be presented in the largest exhibition of FBA Futures since it began in 2012.
The artists’ work explores a variety of subjects and the intersections between them, including the built environment; nature and the rural; the politics of migration, displacement and diaspora; globalization, commercialisation, identity and alienation.
During FBA Futures, several awards will be made including the Be Smart About Art Award, Hottinger Prize for Excellence, and Great Art Visitors’ Choice Award.

“Layover” takes place at @versusartproject in Istanbul October 18th - November 24th with an opening reception the night of the 18th. “Layover explores artistic responses to duality across five countries: Turkey, New Zealand, England, America and The UAE. The show features the works of Rosa Allison, Sarah Alagroobi, Emma Fineman, Vanya Horwath, and Çağla Ulusoy. Each artist, coming from diverse cultural backgrounds, has found commonality within
their use of material. Painting is their means of describing a duality of cultural influence to express a universality within this visual language. An approach of accepting the unexpected, embracing the unpredictable and utilizing dualities, reflects their response to the uncertainties of our geopolitical climate. This strategy provides a means of an honest personal expression within an increasingly polarised society. The choice of exhibition site, Versus Art Project in Istanbul Turkey, is significant when considering notions of cultural duality, being that it is situated between Europe and Asia. Within the exhibition, each artist will occupy spaces on the walls of Versus Art Project together, as a unified collective, but also that occupation is a territorial space that inhabits the presence of people from multiple backgrounds. In this way the walls become a safe space to not only coexist, but also to share dialogue with each other.
Each artist presents work that follows a similar conceptual thread, all rooted in cultural nuances and nomadic displacement of identity, diaspora, nationalism, and heritage. Through these roots each artist branches their own trajectories touching on correlations that unite their practice and process. These processes range from oil painting on canvas to digital fabrication and sculptural construction.”
