Please join Katy Hessel of @thegreatwomenartists in conversation with some of Porthmeor Studios’ most exciting past and present artists-in-residents, including Turner Prize-winning Lubaina Himid, Sam Bassett, Simon Bayliss, Emma Fineman, Rosanne Robertson, and Kate Walters. This virtual talk will provide a great insight into the artists’ experiences living and working at the St Ives-based studios, the impact the landscape and surroundings have had on their work, their involvement in the local community projects, and the history of these famous studios that once housed the likes of Francis Bacon, Patrick Heron, Ben Nicholson, and Wilhemina Barns-Graham.

Katy Hessel-

Katy is best known for running The Great Women Artists, her Instagram account that celebrates female artists on a daily basis. She also hosts The Great Women Artists Podcast, which interviews artists on their careers, or curators, writers or general art lovers on the female artist who means most to them. British Vogue listed the podcast as their Top Podcasts of 2019. 

Katy regularly writes on the subject of women artists and has lectured on the subject for The NationalGallery, Tate, The Courtauld, Cambridge University, Pallant House Gallery,Christie’s, and more; presented films for Dior, Tate, Barbican Centre, Royal Academy of Arts, National Portrait Gallery; audio for Selfridges, BBC Radio 3 & 4; and has been been featured by The Sunday Times, ES Magazine, i-D,among others. 

This past summer, Hessel curated an exhibition at London’s Victoria Miro Gallery that featured three young, female artists. In February 2019 Katy curated an area of Tate Modern for their February Tate Late, and has curated exhibitions at TJ Boulting, Mother London and annual residencies at Palazzo Monti for emerging artists.

Katy is now the host of of Dior’s new podcast Dior Talks, a platform that aims to amplify women’s voices with a focus on feminist art. Katy has hosted conversations with the biggest names in the art industry from Tracey Emin to Judy Chicago to the Creative Director of Dior, Maria Grazia Chiuri. 

Writing and speaking about art history in an accessible and fun manner, Katy’s goal is to readdress the gender imbalance in the art world by reinserting women back into the canon of art history.

Lubaina Himid CBE is a British artist and curator. She is a professor of contemporary art at the University of Central Lancashire. Her art focuses on themes of cultural history and reclaiming identities.

Himid was one of the first artists involved in the UK’s Black Art movement in the 1980s and continues to create activist art which is shown in galleries in Britain, as well as worldwide. Himid was appointed MBE in June 2010 for “services to Black Women’s Art” won the Turner Prize in 2017 and was made a CBE in the 2018 Queen’s Birthday Honours “for services to art.”


Rosanne Robertson-

Robertson is an artist based in West Cornwall (recently relocated from West Yorkshire) working with sculpture, drawing, performance and video to explore the boundaries of the human body and its environment. 

During 2019 Robertson was selected as an associate artist of Yorkshire Sculpture International where they exhibited a solo presentation titled Stone (Butch) alongside the work of Barbara Hepworth at The Hepworth, Wakefield. This body of works explored the act of connecting characteristics from nature with our sexualities and gender expressions.

Sam Bassett-

Samuel Bassett is a British artist born Cornwall in 1982. 

His most recent works imbue a deep rooted connection to place, the sea and landscape, as well as community and heritage. The localised placement of these cautionary tales become allegorical for broader more universal hopes and wider loss, fear and disconnection.

Bassett has exhibited internationally including four solo exhibitions at Anima Mundi, a solo exhibition at Kornfeld Gallery in Berlin and solo presentations at START at the Saatchi Gallery in London and CODE Art Fair, Copenhagen. Works are held in an increasing number of collections worldwide including the acquisition of the work ‘Lost Karensa’ by Tremenheere Sculpture Park which is permanently exhibited alongside James Turrell, Kishio Suga, Richard Long and David Nash among others. Bassett has been featured in numerous articles included Christies magazine and The New York post which is indicative of a notable and rapid increase in the artists popularity and ambition. Samuel Bassett is represented by Anima Mundi.

Emma Fineman-

Fineman lives and works in London, UK. In 2018
she graduated with distinction as an MA In Painting from Royal College of Art,
London, and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BFA in Painting from Maryland

Simon Bayliss-

Simon Bayliss is an artist and music producer based in St Ives, Cornwall, UK. He works mainly in slipware ceramics, video, poetry, watercolour painting and performance. Bayliss also makes and performs dance music as a solo artist and in collaboration with Susie Green, as Splash Addict. Born in 1984, Wolverhampton, he was raised in Andros, Bahamas, then Devon, UK.

Kate Walters-

Kate Walters’ works in watercolour, monotype,  and oil are concerned with the interaction of the animal, plant, dream and human worlds; depicting in raw and graphic immediacy a relationship that is both intimate and nurturing.

Walters studied fine art at Brighton University. She spent some time working at her successful teaching career before completing a postgraduate fine art diploma at University College Falmouth. Around 2000 Kate was elected to be a member of the Newlyn Society of Artists. Her work was shown at the Herrick Gallery in Mayfair in September 2017, where it enjoyed an exceptional response. In February 2019 she had a second solo show and book launch (Shetland Notebooks) at Arusha Gallery in Edinburgh. Another exhibition, of new paintings in oil, will be held at Arusha in a year or so. Kate is currently enjoying her return to oil paint, and is enjoying spending a year on these paintings.
